Sustainable or ecological tourism is an area of tourist activity that has begun to gain strength when choosing a destination, as environmental awareness and the importance of biodiversity preservation has grown worldwide. Control Union created the Green Choice certification in 2013 as a sustainable tourism standard that is based on policies already established around the world and adapted to local conditions.

    Green Choice certification guarantees transparency and credibility for businesses that want to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. At the same time, it strengthens the confidence of guests and partners in the company’s responsible actions.

Sustainable tourism certifications are designed to voluntarily evaluate and monitor the environmental and social impact of tourism organizations or destinations that facilitate tourism activities. Independent third party certification bodies carries out an independent and competent verification of the sustainability performance of companies.

    Hotels are evaluated for a three-year certification, and, if certified, are annually assessed to ensure constant compliance.

    International inspection and certification bodies execute audits and certifications.

    Green Choice certification can assist in enhancing reputation, reducing operating costs through resource efficiency, ensuring regulatory compliance, building customer trust and loyalty, and differentiating it from its competitors in a saturated market. It also demonstrates the hotel’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility, which can lead to positive community relations and long-term sustainability.

    Classic
    Fundamental adherence to the standard. The Classic mark reflects a company’s dedication to environmental and social sustainability albeit on a limited scale.
    Premium
    Enhanced compliance. The minimum requirements have been effectively fulfilled through the implementation of new initiatives that surpass the standards of the program.
    Outstanding
    Exceptional compliance. This category encompasses companies whose processes have been acknowledged and certified by external entities, fostering transparency and ongoing enhancement of their standards.

    Control Union is our current approved certification body and is formally recognized to assess and certify compliance with the relevant standards.
